History
Ostróda is one of the oldest cities of the Masurian Lake District. Among the monuments of the city stands out the Gothic castle, which in 1393 was built by the Teutonic Crosses on the site of a former fortress from the end of the XIII century. Here was the seat of the Teutonic Compute. Since 1977, it has been rebuilt after the devastation caused by war. Today, numerous events take place in the courtyard and in the castle halls. In Ostróda it is also worth seeing the Neo-Gothic church from 1856-1875, with it being added at the beginning of the 20th century. tower, as well as the Evangelical-Augsburg Church of 1907.
In the picturesque landscape of a dozen lakes surrounded by numerous moraine hills and charming mixed forests, there are threads of canals connecting numerous lakes into charming waterways. The azure waters of Masurian lakes, clean air, lush flora and rare in other regions of the country fauna create excellent conditions for relaxation. The advantage of Ostróda is a modern and well-developed hotel base, allowing every tourist to feel good. Depending on the richness of the pockets, guests can relax in luxury hotels or in camping and tent fields, which are not lacking in Ostróda and the surrounding area. Among the many attractions of these beautiful and picturesque areas, a branched shipping system of the Elbląg Canal occupies a modern place, which is not only the longest, but also the most technically interesting, unique in the world channel waterway. The cruise starts in Ostróda, in the city center from the marina on Lake Drwęcki. On the route of this monument of hydrographic art, two locks and five ramps were built. Ramps reduce the difference in water levels by 99 m. Ships overcome ramps on special trolleys. Only with us ships sail on the grass! Regular cruises by white fleet ships on the Ostródzko-Elbląg canal start on 1 May and last until 30 September each year. For hikers, two hiking trails are an amazing attraction: blue – “Naddrwęcki” and green – “Lakes of The Podostródzki” with a total length of 25 km. A paradise for kayakers will be to get to know the canal routes: “Szelążnica River Trail”, “Ostróda-Elbląg Canal Trail”, “Drwęca River Trail”, “Ostróda – Miłomłyn – Stare Jabłonki” and “Upper Drwęca Trail”. The municipality of Ostróda has a unique natural and tourist value. There are picturesque lakes, rivers, canals, forests and areas with a rather unusual terrain sculpture in this region – a strip of Dylewskie Hills with the highest elevation in the Masurian Lake District – Dylewska Mountain – 312 m above sea level. On the territory of the municipality there is a “Jez Reserve. Black” with rare water vegetation, “Jez Reserve. French” near Dylewska Mountain, “Drwęca River Reserve”. A significant part of the area of the municipality is occupied by the Landscape Park of the Dylewskie Hills with an area of 7782 hectares. In addition to the wonderful nature of the municipality, there are many architectural monuments. First of all, sacred buildings, manor houses and palaces, as well as bridges and viaducts of the former railway lines – m.in. Gothic church from the 14th century in Glaznotach, Gothic church from the 15th century in Ornow, palaces in Ostrowin, Szyldak, Klonów. One of the most famous and attractive holiday and tourist destinations in the municipality of Ostróda as well as in the Masurian Lake District are Stare Jabłonki located on the Jez. Small braces. There is a hotel, campsites, resorts, water bras. A wide range of possibilities – water sports, including winter sports (ski slope k/Dylewska Mountains), beautiful forests, clean air, peace, a wide choice of accommodation and gastronomic base makes everyone find something interesting for themselves here.
