History

Already in the Middle Ages there was a well-organized settlement, which later, after the first Piasts, belonged to the Peak Castellani. Around 1290, the area around Człuchów was given by the Prince of Gdańsk Mściwoj II to the Voivode of Kalisz Nicholas of Poniec. In 1312, the sons of the voivodeship sold the Teutonic Crosses, who saw the strategic values of the village and decided to build a castle here. This place was important for the Order. Here, the routes leading from Germany to Malbork crossed, also of great importance was the proximity of the borders with Poland and Western Pomerania. The construction of the facility proceeded quickly and around 1365 a powerful defensive castle was built, the second just after Malbork, in Teutonic possession.

The człuchowska fortification consisted of a proper castle called “High” and submersiors: western, northern, eastern. The castle was surrounded by powerful stone-brick walls and in its heyday it had 11 gates and 9 bastions (until our time only fragments of the walls of the castle, the wall surrounding the courtyard of the castle and trace fragments of two bastions – at the gate of Louise and the Witches’ Tower) were preserved. The castle also had an extensive moat system, deceptive bridges and three types of dungeons, serving as a prison in Teutonic times.

Thanks to the knighthood and the heavy troops stopping at the castle, Człuchów transformed from a modest village into a larger settlement, which on June 19, 1348 grand master Henryk von Dusemer gave in Malbork city rights. The presence of the castle meant that człuchów did not have its own defensive walls. For this reason, the city was repeatedly destroyed and burned. In later years, The Prussian King Frederick Wilhelm II authorized the demolition of the castle in order to rebuild a city consumed by fires in 1786 and 1793. It was not only possible to dismantle the castle tower, because of its height it was later converted into a bell tower, after the building of the Evangelical church in 1825.

The 19th century gave the city a small industry, oil lighting, then gas, and finally electricity, also road and rail connections, bunk buildings of offices and institutions. Człuchów returned to Poland on February 27, 1945. As a result of the hostilities, about 60% of the city’s buildings were destroyed. The city slowly regained its former importance: streets were paved, tenement houses were built, factories, sawmills, schools were built, a railway line was launched, the park and its surroundings were developed.
