History
Olsztyn – castle of the Warmia Chapter. In 1348, the oldest wing was built, and in the 15th-16th centuries the south wing and the upper part of the tower were added. Olsztyn Castle is a perfect example of Gothic architecture. Today, it is home to the Warmia and Mazury Museum. In the years 1516-1519 and 1520-1521 the administrator of the castle was Nikolai Copernicus. Among the many original memos, on the wall of the castle cloister there is personally made by Nicholas Copernicus astronomical plaque to indicate the equinox of spring and autumn. The museum offers its guests meetings under the motto “Sunday in the museum”, during which you can get acquainted with the exhibitions in an unconventional way, e.g. try on antique armor or take. The National Closed Meetings “Let’s sing poetry” and concerts of the chamber ensemble “Pro Musica Antiqua” operating under the auspices of the MWiM (concerts once a month) have already been permanently included in the calendar of Olsztyn cultural events.

Olsztyn is the capital of Warmia and Mazury – a region that is famous not only for its interesting history, but above all for its extremely charming landscapes and the largest concentration of lakes in Poland. It is not without reason that Warmia and Mazury are called the Land of a Thousand Lakes and are considered the “Green Lungs of Poland”. Entrepreneurs who are interested in the profits from tourism and those who are not interested in the green economy are happy to invest here. Large areas of undeveloped land and relatively small areas provide an opportunity for further development of the region. The River Lyna flows through the center of Olsztyn, creating picturesque breakthroughs. It can be reached by canoe all the way to the eastern Polish-Russian border, and after crossing it – further pregoła to Kaliningrad. Within the city lies a forest complex of more than 1000 hectares – extremely popular with residents of the City Forest. Within the administrative boundaries of the city there are 11 (and some say even 15) lakes. The lakes allow water sports, especially sailing and canoeing, and in winter the militias. There are six beaches and swimming pools. During the summer season, cruises take place on the largest lake Ukiel. Olsztyn belongs to the Federation of Kopernikowski Cities. The seat of the federation is located in the Olsztyn Planetarium and Astronomical Observatory, which conducts extensive outreach and didactic activities and invites you to interesting astronomical projections, observations of the Sun, shows of the starry sky, moon and planets. At the High Gate has its beginning the “red” Kopernikowski Trail, which leads through the Good Town, Lidzbark Warmiński, Monetary, Braniewo to Frombork.
