Olsztyn prides itself on its castle of the Warmian Chapter. Construction of the oldest wings began in 1348, and in the XV-XVI century, a wing was added to the southern upper part of the tower. Olsztyn castle is a perfect example of Gothic architecture. Currently headquartered is the Museum of Warmia and Mazury. During the years between 1516-1519 and 1520-1521 the castle’s administrator was Nicolaus Copernicus. Among the many original memorabilia on the wall of the castle is personally created by Nicolaus Copernicus astronomical table to indicate the equinoctial spring and autumn. The Museum offers its guests a meeting under the banner of  “Sunday in the museum” (Niedziela w muzeum), where you can explore the exhibitions in unconventional ways, such as ancient armor to try or take. National Meeting of the Castle “Singin poetry” ( Śpiewajmy poezję) and concerts of chamber music ensemble “Pro Musica Antiqua” acting under the auspices of MWiM (concerts once a month) has been permanently added to the calendar of cultural events in Olsztyn.
Olsztyn is the capital of Warmia and Masurian region – a region which is famous not only for its interesting history, but primarily with unusually charming scenery and the largest concentrations of lakes in Poland. Not only the reasons Warmia and Masuria is called the Land of Thousand Lakes, and is believed to be “green lungs of Poland”. Entrepreneurs happily invest here, who are interested in profits from tourism, and the ones who are familiar with eco-friendly economy. Through the heart of Olsztyn, swift stream, creating a picturesque gorges, flows river Łyna. You can reach by canoe into the eastern Polish-Russian border, and After crossing the border, you can continue down the Pregoła River to Kaliningrad. The city lies within the forest complex covers over 1000 ha – very popular among the inhabitants of Town Forest. The administrative boundaries of the city contains 11 (and some of them say that even 15) lakes. Lakes provide water sports, especially sailing, canoeing and in the winter ice-boating. There are six beaches and bathing facilities. In the summer season, there are being held river boat cruises at the largest lake of Ukiel. Olsztyn Belongs to the Federation of Copernicus Towns, Which has its main office in the Planetarium and the Astronomical Observatory in Olsztyn. It offers a wide-ranging activities, teaching of popularize astronomy, as well as it offers interesting projections of astronomical observations of the Sun, shows of starry sky, moon and the planets.
